Monmouth Beach is located west of the harbour and runs one kilometre south-west of the Cobb wall.
The beach is primarily composed of pebbles, but as you travel west along the coast, rocky outcrops start to stand out more. The western part of the beach has a layer of limestone known as the "ammonite graveyard" or "ammonite pavement," which is well-known for the huge ammonites it contains. This makes the beach a popular place to look for fossils. You might locate a few little ammonites if you're patient and lucky. Plan to go fossil hunting with a guide if you want to be sure of your success. Fossil walks are led by the Lyme Regis Museum.
